Our Mission. DEV Joni develops foundational open technologies that enable hardware and software from different sources to work together seamlessly. Our goal is to provide neutral, reusable building blocks for scientific and industrial projects, ensuring interoperability, adaptability, and reliabilit at the lowest layers of system design.
Who We Are. We are a small, independent sole-trader business. Operating without external investors, shareholders, or corporate obligations allows us to focus entirely on developing open, vendor-neutral technologies. This independence ensures that the tools we create remain fully accessible, adaptable, and free from external influence.
What We Do. DEV Joni creates base-layer open technologies including communication protocols, programming languages and interpreters and software infrastructure. These technologies open-source and modular technologies allow users to build exactly what they need while maintaining maximum flexibility.
In addition to developing base-layer technologies, we create fully open-source devices as reference implementations. These devices demonstrate how our technologies can be applied in practice, provide testbeds for development. They are primarily tools for experimentation and proof-of-concept purposes, not commercial products.
In January 2023, DEV Joni began as a project to build open-source scientific instruments - tools that researchers could inspect, modify, and trust. During this work, it became clear that truly interoperable devices require strong shared foundations: common protocols, communication layers, and software infrastructure that different manufacturers can rely on.
Developing both the foundational technologies and full commercial devices proved too large for a single small business. To ensure these ideas could grow, Joni co-founded Alfrisin Oy with five partners. Alfrisin now advances the product side of the vision, creating interoperable automation and electrical devices for science and small-scale industry.
Meanwhile, DEV Joni remains dedicated to the base layer itself - maintaining open, manufacturer-agnostic technologies that anyone can adopt. Keeping these technologies independent ensures they remain neutral, transparent, and useful to all device makers, not tied to any single company.
Joni also serves as CTO of Alfrisin Oy, where DEV Joni’s open technologies are applied in real products. This dual role grounds the foundational work in practical needs while maintaining strict independence: the base technologies remain developed under DEV Joni, separate from any single manufacturer, ensuring they remain open, neutral, and available to everyone.
Joni Kemppainen, founder of DEV Joni, combines scientific expertise with hands-on technical skills to develop foundational open technologies. With a BSc in Physics from the University of Oulu and a PhD in Sensory Neuroscience from the University of Sheffield, he has extensive experience designing and implementing robust experimental systems and instrumentation.
Since founding DEV Joni in 2023, Joni has focused on creating open-source, modular, and adaptable technologies - such as communication protocols, interpreters, and low-level software infrastructure - that serve as building blocks for scientific and industrial projects. His background ensures that every technology is reliable, practical, and independent, enabling users to implement and extend solutions without restriction.
DEV Joni collaborates with organisations and individuals who wish to extend, refine, or implement our open technologies. Collaboration focuses on advancing the underlying protocols, interpreters, and software infrastructure.
