Our custom and workshop services tackle challenges off-the-shelf products can’t solve. We design and build semi-custom devices quickly, cost-effectively, and flexibly for scientific, industrial, or even amateur applications - helping labs get grants, make discoveries, and businesses increase sales or improve efficiency.

Running daily operations
Joni Kemppainen, founder of DEV Joni, combines scientific expertise with hands-on technical skills to create innovative, user-focused technology. With a BSc in Physics from the University of Oulu and a PhD in Sensory Neuroscience from the University of Sheffield, he excels on building and settting up customs instruments for experimental researh.
Since founding DEV Joni in 2023, Joni has applied this deep scientific and technical knowledge to develop open-source, customisable technology products. His background ensures that every solution - from lab automation tools to industrial prototypes - is reliable, practical, and made for real-world challenges. He has one goal: To help scientists and industrial customers succeed by solving their problems and boosting their scienctific and industrial output.

Jori-Aleksi Kemppainen serves as a Industrial Advisor at our company, bringing extensive experience in heavy industry maintenance. He began his career by studying automotive mechanics at Kajaani Vocational College, then continued his studies in mechanical engineering at Oulu University of Applied Sciences. However, as a highly capable professional, he was quickly drawn into the industry before fully completing his studies.
Jori-Aleksi has also earned a professional qualification in machinery installation and maintenance, with a focus on practical skills for demanding industrial environments His hands-on expertise spans welding, metal-cutting, maintance planning, and troubleshooting, ensuring that heavy-duty machinery in the mining industry operates 24/7 seamlessly.
His experience in challenging environments such as SSAB, Terrafame, and a mid-sized metal industry company has equipped him with the expertise to address complex industrial challenges. This combination of formal education and real-world experience makes Jori-Aleksi exceptionally skilled at meeting the unique needs of heavy industries, especially in metal manufacturing, machinery operation, and maintenance.
At DEV Joni, Jori-Aleksi plays a crucial role in identifying and solving industry-specific challenges - from machinery procurement to operational optimization and preventative maintenance. His expert guidance is key in strengthening our competitive edge by understanding industrial needs. Outside of work, Jori-Aleksi enjoys wood cutting, working on cars, and high-end PC gaming.

Dr. Anthi Apostolopoulou, PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) is Scientific Advisor at DEV Joni. She is a neuroscientist with over 14 years of international research experience across Greece, Switzerland, Germany, the UK, and Cyprus. Her career has focused on how the brain develops, adapts, and responds to disease, with work spanning cancer biology, neurodegeneration, and sensory processing.
At DEV Joni, Anthi helps us understand the needs of experimental research laboratories and provides feedback on the tools and software we design for scientific customers. Her insight ensures our solutions are scientifically robust, practical for everyday lab use, and aligned with the challenges researchers face.
Anthi’s expertise combines advanced imaging, animal models, and computational approaches, supported by a strong publication record and prestigious funding awards , including the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship. She has also informally co-supervised and mentored students, taught at several universities, and contributed to outreach and science communication.
Her unique blend of academic insight and collaborative mindset strengthens DEV Joni’s mission to develop open, reliable, and researcher-friendly technologies. Outside the lab, Anthi’s two favorite hobbies are playing the violin, running, and figure skating.
We combine scientific insight, engineering skills, and hands-on craftsmanship to deliver fully integrated, high-performance solutions for labs and industry. Wherever it adds the most value - from product architecture and critical software to precision hardware - we mostly develop in-house to ensure reliability, customizability, and originality.
